Project Description

"We are happy to have the opportunity to work with Bechtel and USAID to help improve the quality of life for the people in Iraq," said Jim McNulty, Parsons Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Iraq Infrastructure II is a program to rehabilitate and repair Iraq's infrastructure system. The current Iraqi infrastructure facilities are in dire need of rehabilitation and expansion as a result of decades of neglect and lack of spare parts.

The Iraq Infrastructure II program is part of the U.S. Government's reconstruction assistance to the Iraqi people, aimed at helping maintain stability, ensure the delivery of essential services, and facilitate economic recovery.

Parsons is part of a team headed by Bechtel National, with support from Horne Engineering Services, that has been selected to provide this major program of engineering, procurement and construction services for a series of new Iraqi infrastructure projects. These projects include: repair of power generation facilities, electrical grids, municipal water systems and sewage systems; continued rehabilitation or repair of airport facilities; and additional dredging, repair and upgrading of the seaport at Umm Qasr.

Additional projects consist of significant rural water programs, construction of Iraq's first purpose built sanitary landfill, repairing and building government and public facilities including schools, selected ministry buildings and major irrigation structures, as well as restoring essential transport links. Parsons will play a key role in water and wastewater sectors and may also provide support in other sectors such as surface transportation.

This project is beginning in January 2004 and will extend through December 2005. After completion of the implementation plan in conjunction with USAID, the team intends on hiring the maximum number of Iraqi employees at all levels, of subcontracting to qualified Iraqi companies to the maximum extent possible, and of providing comprehensive training and work experience for Iraqi managers and their employees. The team also plans a significant program to include small businesses in the project.
