As an industry leader in tunnel engineering and design, Parsons provides innovative and economical solutions for the fast-track creation of underground structures and facilities around the world. On a daily basis, we serve the underground engineering and program management needs of a diverse domestic and international clientele representing the highway, rail, rail transit, and aviation sectors. Other market areas we serve include underground utilities, water storage and transportation tunnels, and underground buildings. All these clients appreciate Parsons’ expertise in developing innovative project delivery systems that minimize the risk of underground construction.
Our underground engineering expertise encompasses the full spectrum of state-of-the-art tunneling technology, including the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), top-down tunneling, and many other cutting-edge methods. Parsons has over the years introduced numerous innovations to the tunneling industry, including advanced hard rock and soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology, single pass tunnel construction, and advanced tunnel waterproofing systems. We also lead the industry in electrical, mechanical, ventilation, and fire and life safety systems.
Parsons tunneling accomplishments include many benchmark projects such as Washington, DC Metro’s $6 billion, twin-tunnel program, which was named by the American Underground Construction Association as the most significant tunneling project in the U.S. over the past years. Parsons has designed several deep tunnels on the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) project in Chicago, and provided advisory services for the English Channel Tunnel. When it comes to subway construction, Parsons’ expertise is represented in almost all major programs in the U.S., as well as overseas including the Singapore Metro, Taipei Metro, Kuala Lumpur Light Rail, and Tel Aviv Light Rail. Our major highway tunnel projects range from a $500 million segment of the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel system, to the Izmir Ring Road Tunnel in Turkey,
and the development of a tunnel alternative for New York’s Gowanus Expressway.
