Parsons Parsons

Project Description

Parsons' contract for Pierce County Public Works & Utilities provided for the improvement of Lake Tapps Parkway East from 8th Street East to the South Access Ramp and East Valley Highway East from 400 ft south of 8th Street East to 500 ft north of the North Access Ramp. Work for this challenging contract included clearing and grubbing, roadway excavation and embankment, erosion control, drainage, piling, bridge substructure and superstructure, retaining walls, structural earth walls, surfacing, paving, illumination systems, traffic signal and control systems, wetland creation, landscaping, and other associated work.

This project also included constructing a 480-ft, multispan, precast concrete girder bridge over a portion of the East Valley Highway and the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) north–south mainlines that serve the Puget Sound Area. All work throughout these two corridors was performed under live traffic conditions, using only short-term closures to accommodate the placement of the concrete girders. A portion of the work associated with excavating and constructing the bridge substructure included installing and monitoring the structural shoring to protect the nearby BNSF tracks.

The bridge reroutes the eastbound 8th Street traffic above BNSF crossing at East Valley. The traffic signal was subsequently reconfigured, and the crossing was removed. An additional signal system was installed just north of the old intersection to control the traffic getting on the bridge and off the Lake Tapps Parkway.
